How PAYE Is Calculated in Kenya (2026)
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the progressive income tax the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) charges on employment income. It applies in five bands: 10% on the first KES 24,000 of monthly taxable pay, 25% on the next band up to KES 32,333, 30% on income between KES 32,334 and KES 500,000, 32.5% on income between KES 500,001 and KES 800,000, and 35% on anything above KES 800,000. Every employee then gets a personal relief of KES 2,400 per month (KES 28,800 per year) subtracted from the tax computed. If you pay eligible health or life insurance premiums, you can also claim insurance relief of 15% of the premium, capped at KES 5,000 per month.
What is the personal relief for PAYE in Kenya?
Every resident employee is entitled to a flat personal relief of KES 2,400 per month, deducted directly from the tax computed on the progressive bands above — not from your taxable income.
